Celebrating Five
Recent Instagram posts have been worthy of much more information such as the “Before Hamida’s 7thBirthday.” The background to this post is the tragic topic of infant mortality rates in Malawi.
Huge improvements have been made since the 1982 stats of 27% or 270 per 1,000 infants dying and are currently recorded at 4.2% before the age of 1 and 6.3% before the age of 5. However, these are averages and rural locations experience higher levels of infant mortality due to a lack of clean water, food nutrition and sanitation.
Children who reach their 5th birthday have a stronger chance of reaching their teens and adulthood. The story of Hamida, a seven year old from Kawiri, is a note of celebration as her future is now being shaped by the Compact investment and village commitment to life changing practices.
You’ve read all this before but the context and impact of a solar powered well, sustainable farming, nutrition training and active reforestation are life changing for the up and coming generations.

Urgent Appeal
It’s a statistical fact that the general public are motivated to give by tragic circumstances and heart wrenching images. It is this type of appeal that accounts for almost 80% of general giving and is often an “in the moment” thing before being wiped from our screens.
We are grateful for those who responded quickly to our urgent appeal for a replacement vehicle and know some people need longer to process such appeals. We will keep you informed as to when we are in a position to move forward with the purchase of a vehicle.
The current journey time to Nkhotakota region has doubled to 6 hours. Please share this appeal as the transport is vital for training and management of the sites.
