Help CompactRF to Build the Next Generation

In September Compact took its first steps into GIS mapping (Geographic Information System), a technology used to capture, analyze, and visualize geographic data. It combines layers of information about a location—such as terrain, population, or land use—into a single map, allowing us to understand relationships, patterns, and trends in that area. This mapping will allow the Compact team to follow progress in the field and make decisions regarding the rural planning, environmental management and public health. GIS mapping will play a critical role in solving complex problems brought about by climatic challenges and is becoming a powerful tool for understanding and managing the physical world.

To achieve this, we have purchased a mid-range drone kit which Michael Manije will take initial responsibility for, and Patrick Singoyi will undergo a three-month training course in GIS programing. Between them they will lay the foundation for the first stage of developing this important work for Compact. By 2026 supporters should be able to see a bird's eye view of villages, water towers, taps and fields. As always thanks for reading and supporting Compact.

"Mapping is not just about charts and coordinates—it's how we make sense of our place in the world, understand connections, and chart a course forward."

Helping Hands

We wish to give our grateful thanks to Mike Haswell from Cardiff, Wales, UK for delivering our drone to Lilongwe (which could not be purchased in Malawi). Mike has spent over 20 years working in Malawi, focusing on agricultural development projects and playing a key role in linking local producers to international markets. Dividing his time between the UK and Malawi, Mike spends about half the year on the ground.

He has also collaborated with African Parks on innovative human-wildlife conflict solutions, including the successful use of chilli plant borders to deter elephants from damaging crops and endangering communities. Beyond agriculture, Mike has coached the Malawi national cricket team since 2018/19, guiding them to compete in World Cup qualifiers. In recognition of his contributions, he was appointed Malawi Consul for Wales by the Malawi Ambassador to the UK, a role he has held for six years.

For his heart to help Compact we thank him and look forward to meeting him one day!
