Meeting essential needs of rural Malawian communities.

Compact is dedicated to transforming lives in vulnerable rural communities across Malawi, Africa. We deliver high-impact, sustainable solutions to the most pressing climate-related challenges—ensuring access to clean water, improving resilient farming practices, securing safe and sufficient food supplies, and investing in the environment to protect future generations.

Our work is rooted in long-term impact, empowering communities to adapt, thrive, and build a more secure future in the face of climate change.

Our Work: A Foundational Approach

Delivering water solutions, food security & nutrition training to the ultra poor.

A Mindful Foundation

A Malawian-weighted board brings added value of local knowledge which is often missing from Western organizations. This choice affirms the sharing of local and place-based knowledge.

Compact is committed to demonstrating the transformative power of restoration by improving soil and water quality in rural Malawi. Farms face severely depleted soils due to poor farming techniques, the lack of organic matter, essential nutrients, and climate shock making them ill-suited for sustainable farming. Despite these challenges, the local climate holds incredible potential, capable of supporting multiple harvests annually, offering a chance to significantly improve the livelihoods of local communities. This potential remains untapped due to lack of knowledge and funding. Compact address these issues through restorative agriculture, agroforestry, and riparian restoration practices and is unlocking a brighter, more sustainable future for the present and future generations.

Impacting the Watershed

The big picture for Compact Resource Foundation is to improve soil and water quality on rural farms in Malawi's Nkhotakota district and improve the quality of life for these people. Villages, concentrated around one watershed, share the same pressing need for improved water flow and soil health. Restoration efforts include composting, sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, small gardens, nutrition education, and riparian restoration. These initiatives are supported with a solar water tower installation to maximize impact in each location.

The outcome will be measured by extended growing seasons, improved water flow, increased yields, and better health. Each project is underpinned with monitoring through biannual surveys, follow-up assessments, and drone imaging.

Project Objectives

To provide rural Malawians with easy access to clean water, food security and nutritional training.

Water Solutions

The installation of solar powered water pumps, though more costly, goes beyond the standard borehole with its flexibilities and ease of use. This lessens the burden on women and children who are the main water collectors.

Food Security

The permaculture process includes land restoration through regular composting, sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, small gardens, and riparian restoration. This type of farming leads to a higher and healthier crop yield that greatly improves the villagers' wellbeing. It is a clear path to healthier communities and a sustainable environment.

Nutrition Training

Training sessions encompass: knowledge on basic nutrition, food preparation, hygiene and sanitation, food processing, storage, preservation, safety and dietary diversification.
